3 Mandatory Stages of Every Change & Why it is so?

“All Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and so gorgeous at the end”- Robin Sharma

What a statement!

And this is the fact of life in all aspects around us.

But how can we all get benefited from this statement?

Let’s look at this through a different lens!

It means if you are surrounded by a whole lot of chaos around you. And the things don’t appear to be so clear to you. A feeling of overwhelming encompasses your mind, which seemingly appears to be out of your capabilities or competencies.

At such times, if one has a belief that this is only the Phase 1 of the journey and ultimately, we all have to reach to phase 3 of the journey, then one sees the situation from a totally different and positive perspective.

So, let’s examine any change required to achieve any goal or dream of our life in 3 phases:

Phase I:

When you start something new, there is always a chaos i.e. there seem to be too many options. The decision to be made is which alternative to go for, out of so many available before us. Every alternative requires time, efforts and financial stakes and we want to be sure that wherever, we invest our resources, there should be some kind of reasonable assurance to that.

Believe me, most of us the population gets stuck at Phase I looking at the enormity and the overwhelmingness of the number of action steps to be taken to arrive at a conclusion.

So that way, crossing the Phase I i.e. shortlisting some options out of many, requires at least some level of confidence, commitment, and faith that there must be something worth putting efforts in the unknown journey.

Congratulations to those who cross the Phase I i.e. make some choice or decision at least- to make a change.

Phase II:

Once you cross the phase I i.e. you have decided the best alternative for you.

Again, “best” here means depending upon the level of information, experience, you possess at that point of time for you. So it also means, the definition of ‘best’ may keep on changing depending upon your life circumstances at any point of time. There is a concept of “course correction”, wherein once you move forward, you keep on correcting your course of action, based on the feedback from outside circumstances or the environment around you.

So phase II is the place, where you are actually taking action on your chosen option. But now you have started taking action, then why it should be messy?

Of course, it has to be!

Because, once you get into the unknown, you will face unfamiliar, never handled things. Your existing set of knowledge or experience may not have all the answer to the newer questions.

It will demand an expansion of you. Expansion by way of learning new skill sets and may require un-learning your past knowledge or skill sets, which may be unsuitable for the current scenario.

So Phase II- is messy on two counts:

  1. Firstly, you are coming across the newer set of things or requirements, again which seems too much to handle for you.
  2. Secondly, it also requires you to expand your capabilities by taking massive and speedy action on the things.

So now comes:

Phase III:

Why is it beautiful?

Starting from maddening chaotic situations in life requires a lot of persistence and mental training to clear our thoughts and clouds of doubts punching on your face every now and then.

By crossing that Phase I, you have already demonstrated a new “You”, who can stand bolder in front of strong winds and it also shows your faith and belief in your abilities that you will figure it out.

“Everything is figureoutable” Marie Forleo

Furthermore Phase II, the messy part had already toughened you mentally and emotionally. The messy phase has also made you learn tremendously. The learning will be steeply demonstrated in your enhanced psychological and behavioral aspects. Also, the drive to clear the mess (although being surrounded by the mess), helps you develop your strategic abilities to handle the practical situations.

“80% of success in life is psychology and 20% is mechanics” — Tony Robbins

So what else do you need now for a great life?

Now you have the required persistence to clear any kind of chaos in your life. Also, you have developed tremendous capabilities and strengths to combat the messiness of any situation.

So outpacing the chaotic field of Phase I and also after successfully crossing through the mess of phase II, the life HAS to be a beautiful now.

So, let’s not get discouraged by the initial uncertainties, while starting anything new. Let’s keep moving despite the hurdles coming in our way.

These hurdles are not the real obstacles; rather these are the stimulants to enhance our capabilities to achieve success in our lives.
